Diamond Owlz win Batavia Spring Fever Championship!
|
Sunday May 2, 2010 Batavia, IL
The Illinois Diamond Owlz were successful in securing their second tournament championship of the season Sunday by outlasting the New Lenox Rebels for a 4-3 victory in the Batavia Spring Fever Tournament. Jake Esp started for the championship and pitched a strong three innings allowing only one run to cross the plate. With the game tied 1-1, Tyler Halas put the Owlz ahead with a long home run. The Owlz batters managed to score two more insurance runs, which proved to be the winning runs in the 4-3 victory. The Rebels fought hard, staging a furious comeback that fell just short. With strong pitching, players up and down the line-up that can hit the ball and disciplined defense, they will be a team to be reckoned with as the season progresses. It was a great Championship game! A repeat performance happens this Wednesday, as the Owlz travel to New Lenox for a rematch in what should be another great game.

The Owlz hitters displayed, once again this weekend, that they are a force on the field. In the six games played, the Owlz out-scored their competition 65-13 and provided more than enough runs for a team still learning the finer aspects of defense. Pitching is also becoming a trademark of this team. Nine of the ten players rostered for the tournament took to the mound in an impressive display of depth at this critical position.
The Illinois Diamond Owlz would like to congratulate the Rebels on their second place finish as well as the 3rd place Bartlett Bandits and 4th place Wheaton Briarcliffs. We extend our wishes for a great a great season to all of the teams that participated and good luck the rest of the way out! A special thank you goes out to Batavia Youth Baseball for their tireless efforts in field preparation, which allowed for a complete tournament in spite of the adverse weather conditions.
