Illinois Diamond Owlz Win Illinois State Games Championship!

Sunday April 25, 2010
Illinois State Games Tournament
Hoffman Estates, IL
The Illinois Diamond Owlz won the Illinois State Games this week-end beating the #3 seed Algonquin Storm 7-0 in the semi-finals and #4 seed South Elgin 3-2 in the championship game. Owlz pitcher Cole Nelson pitched a complete game shut- out against the Algonquin Storm in the semi-finals giving up only 3 hits in 7 innings. Nelson racked up 11 strikeouts against only one walk in a display of pinpoint control. The win advanced the Owlz into the championship game against a waiting South Elgin team.

Weather for the championship game felt more like the start of football season with the cold, windy and rainy game conditions. A strong wind was blowing in from the outfield, and the  Owlz knew it would a low scoring affair determined by pitching. Being in this situation many times before,  the Owlz turned the game over to veteran Tyler Halas, who took the mound for the championship game. Like Nelson, Halas dominated in a complete game performance, allowing only two runs on four hits. Halas put up 13 strikeouts on the board with only one base on balls in his 7 inning, championship win!

It was an awesome display from Nelson and Halas on the mound today.  Their over-powering fastballs mixed in with just enough off-speed pitches kept the opposing batters off balance and frustrated all day, while the normally lethal, big-bat lineup for the Owlz provided just enough firepower to preserve the victories.

The Diamond Owlz would like to congratulate Tom Baird and his South Elgin team for reaching the championship and a hard fought game and second place finish. We have played Tom in years' past, and he always fields a good team with well-respected players and parents. Tyler Halas would also like to congratulate all of his friends from Kenyon Woods Middle School on the South Elgin team and wish them luck for the remainder of the season!

Diamond Owlz Win Game 1 of Illinois State Games.
Owlz Plate 16 Batters and Score 13 runs in first inning!

Friday April 23, 2010
Streamwood, Illinois

Game one of the Illinois State Games pitted the Algonquin Hawks against the Illinois Diamond Owlz in what turned out to be an offensive assault by the Diamond Owlz. The Owlz first inning assault brought 16 batters to the plate and 13 runs scored which was more than enough for starting pitcher Cole Nelson. Nelson gave up one hit and no runs in his two innings of work while racking up six stikeouts. With the determination to end the game in three innings and conserve pitching, the Owlz plated another 10 batters and 6 runs in the second inning to stretch their lead to 19-0 after two innings. Will Corn  "Corn-Dog" racked up his 3rd homerun in the last five games and Matt Ellis got his first Homerun of the early Owlz season.

The Algonquin Hawks managed to lead off the third inning with three consecutive hits and score 2 runs before veteran lefty Alex Troop settled in on the mound and shut down the Hawks for good, confirming the 19-2 Owlz victory. Owlz are back in action Saturday at 4:00 and 8:00 p.m. facing the Wheatland Ducks White and Grayslake Coyotes in game two and three of pool play.
